Since Graduating from Westminster only 2 year ago, Designer Emma Bell has already had 2 seasons on the catwalk, collaboration with footwear brand 'Irregular Choice' and work for car manufacturing giants Vauxhall.
Emma was originally brought up in Newcastle until she moved to London in her 20's where she began a course at the University of Westminster, persuing a course in fashion design.
Emma's Designs are quirky fresh original designs bursting with bright candyfloss colours and harajuku style looks. In a recent interview Emma saying her designs we're conjured up from a manner of things,'Ohh everything and anything….most importantly what I see going on around me from people walking up the street to strange characters I meet in everyday life from those that are right in front of me such as the woman who strolls her pink dog past my house every morning mixed in with Russian Fairy tales…. cringe worthy stories in real life magazines…. and a lot is also influenced by my travels'(Emma has taken several trips to south east Asia for inspiration).
Her Catwalk shows themselves show of the designers kitsch, shiny flair, with lurid colours , glitter, music and cupcakes! Her most recent show with 'Vauxhall fashion scout' which show cased Emma's most recent designs, which ranged from a 'knitted food dress' to a 'pizza slice bikini' with each other the models wearing an intricate 'fast food' head piece. The Show was bright and fun , defiantly highlighting the strength of her designs. Her use of unusual materials also is a main point in her collections, with fabrics such as printed tablecloths ,PVC and lurid coloured Lycra being regular occurrence within the collections. The makeup in the shows too, highlights the ott feel of the collection with big lips, glitter encrusted eyes, and bold coloured eye shadows.
Emma certainly isn't bothered by critics describing her work, she even described her pieces as 'hideous’ and taking inspiration from sources including “mail order brides and chavs sniffing glue at fairgrounds''. Her recent trip's to South Asia have also help inspire the more recent collections, where Emma used her time to take note of the cultural aspects of the areas, noting down certain points and collecting fabrics for inspiration.
The young design has already had a vast amount of work experience, which helped her gain a look into the world of fashion. With 2 seasons working with women swear designer Rebbecca Taylor over in New York and also worked for a period assisting textile designer Donna Lynch. She too has already had her work appear on several TV shows, such a 'British Style Genius' where one of her most known pieces was featured on the BBC show advert, even more importantly one of her classic yellow fast food cardigans was seen recently on channel 4 show 'skins' which gave Emma an extra boost of publicity to the more open market.
Emma Bell will most defiantly come on leaps and bounds in 2009. Keep an eye out for this glitter encrusted star in the making!
